Advanced Dental Hygiene Practioner - ADHP

What is an ADHP and what can an ADHP do?

The ADHP or Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner will:

  • provide a cost effective workforce model
  • provide services in Public Health settings like school and community locations, where people live.
  • increase access to oral health care for under served populations
  • decrease barriers to this same care
  • The establishment of the Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner (ADHP) is good for all Registered Dental Hygienists  ... As more Registered Dental Hygienists add to their license and education to become Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioners (ADHPs) for career opportunities in Public Health settings, more openings will be created for Registered Dental Hygienists who chose the traditional path of working in private dental offices.

Attention Dental Hygienists

Connecticut ADHP Bill Information:

In February, a bill to establish an Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner Pilot Program, HB 5355, was introduced in the Connecticut General Assembly.  The bill seeks to create a pilot program in which graduates of an advanced dental hygiene master's program could provide direct patient care in public health facilities.  The pilot will take place in the city of Bridgeport for a period of one year.  If passed, the program would commence on or before January 1, 2013 and would terminate on January 1, 2014.   The Commissioner of Social Services, in consultation with the Commissioner of Public Health, would be required to report the results of the pilot to the Public Health and Human Services Committees not later than July 1, 2014.

On March 23, 2010, HB 5355 passed the Connecticut Legislature's Human Services Committee by a vote of 14 to 5 and was sent to the House Floor.

The Connecticut State Legislature adjourned on May 4.  The 2010 session closed with a number of bills still pending; among them was HB 5355, an act to establish an Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner Pilot Program. CDHA was successful in getting HB 5355 passed out of the Human Services Committee by a vote of 14-5 and to the House Floor earlier this year. Thank you to everyone who contacted to their legislators in support of this much-needed legislation that would increase access to oral health for Connecticut.

This bill can be tracked online at ADHA's legislative tracking site:

Sample Text

Hello, my name is ______ and I am a Registered Dental Hygienist, living in _______.   I am calling (writing) today to ask Senator/Representative _______ to support legislation to establish the Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner. The ADHP will add a new member to the dental team to deliver care to the underserved in Connecticut. Currently, too many are without access to dental services necessary to maintain optimal oral health, which is an integral component of total health. Please support the Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner.  This proposal will make it possible for thousands of underserved patients to receive dental care who cannot obtain it today.   *Always end with, "Can I expect your support as we'd like to know who is supportive."*
