As research findings about
inflammation and its effects on the body expand, a new recognition of the
relationship between oral disease and general health has emerged.This course addresses the inflammatory
process and how chronic inflammation relates to pregnancy and preterm low birth
weight, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory
disease.Care planning for patients with
these systemic conditions will be addressed.
Learning Objectives
·Review the inflammatory process as it affects the oral cavity and

Michele Darby, BSDH, MS
Eminent Scholar, University Professor, and Chairman in the Gene W
Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene at Old Dominion University, Norfolk,
Virginia. Professor Darby has lectured across North America, Europe, Asia and
the Middle East; served as editor for dental hygiene journals; is one of the
associate editors of the International
Journal of Dental Hygiene; is editor
of Mosby's Comprehensive Review of Dental Hygiene, ed 6and
co-editor of Dental Hygiene Theory and Practice, ed 3 ; and
author of numerous professional articles. She
is a recipient of the Warner Lambert-ADHA Award for Excellence in Dental
Hygiene, the Rufus Alan Tonelson Distinguished Faculty Award from the Old
Dominion University Alumni Association in recognition of outstanding
contributions to the intellectual development of the University, the Virginia
State Council on Higher Education Faculty Award, and the Faculty Advisor Award
from the American Dental Hygienists' Association for her work with the Student
American Dental Hygienists'Association. In 2003, she received the Outstanding
Achievement Award from the Friends of the Old Dominion University Library.She is one of about 30 faculty at Old Dominion
University who has earned the title of Eminent Scholar.Her current research interest focus on the
effects of low atmospheric temperature
plasma on oral pathogens and oral health product testing.During the first
six months of 2010, she is a Fulbright Scholar at Jordan University of Science
and Technology in Irbid.

evidenced-based strategies to provide clinicians practical guidelines regarding
the use of ultrasonic instrumentation.Ultrasonic instrumentation techniques will be covered
extensively following the dental hygiene process of care and utilizing hands-on
activities.Patient cases
demonstrating successful treatment with ultrasonic instrumentation will be
shared.
Gail Malone is a Clinical Educator for DENTSPLY Professional
serving the Northeast Region of the US.She received her dental hygiene degree from Montgomery County Community
College in Blue Bell, PA and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental
Hygiene from Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, where she served as
adjunct faculty. Gail's experience of more than 20 years in dentistry includes
clinical practice, dental hygiene education, dental practice management and
dental distribution.She joined the
DENTSPLY team from Benco Dental Company where her most recent position was
Director of Training and Education.Gail
has developed and presented educational programs to dental and dental hygiene
students, professional associations, dental societies and study clubs.Her focus is to provide dental professionals
with current scientific research and information to assist them in implementing
effective and efficient evidence based treatment protocols in their clinical
practice.

When was the last time you had a
medical emergency in your office?Fortunately, for both you and your patients it has probably been a long
time. When was the last time you looked at your emergency kit? Chances are your
medications are outdated and your emergency oxygen tank is empty. Do you need
an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) for your office? When should you call
911? What is a good textbook on Medical Emergencies? This presentation will review the
ten (10) most common medical emergencies that commonly occur in dental offices
and how you should treat those emergencies. Participants will be provided a
list of the basic medications and equipment that you should have in your office
emergency kit.
Dr. William A. MacDonnell is a graduate of Georgetown University
School of Dentistry and completed his residency in anesthesiology at the
University of Pittsburgh. He served as a staff anesthesiologist at the John
Dempsey University Hospital, University of Connecticut School of Dental
Medicine and Medicine from 1978 to 1983. He has served on the clinical faculty
since 1983. Dr. MacDonnell has been awarded the Georgetown University W. Marion
Falls Award for Leadership, the Horace Wells Club Award of Merit, the Daniel
Lynch Award of the Dental Society of Greater Waterbury, and the Connecticut
State Dental Association Horace Hayden Award. Dr. MacDonnell chaired the CSDA
160th Anniversary Horace Wells Memorial Restoration Committee. Bill
and his wife, Margie, have four children.
