Dental Hygienist: A preventive oral health professional who has graduated from an accredited dental hygiene program in an institution of higher education, licensed in dental hygiene who provides educational, clinical, research, administrative and therapeutic services supporting total health through the promotion of optimal health. Connecticut boasts four accredited dental hygiene programs in institutions of higher education. The origin of dental hygiene took place in Bridgeport, Connecticut with a start of a school by Alfred C. Fones in 1913. Fones School of Dental Hygiene continues at the University of Bridgeport, offering Associates in Science, Bachelors in Science and Masters in Science in Dental Hygiene. Tunxis Community College was the next institution to offer dental hygiene in Connecticut beginning in 1975. It offers an Associates in Science in Dental Hygiene. The University of New Haven opened its clinic in 1993 and offers both the Associates in Science and Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene. The newest program to open its doors is Lincoln College of New England which started its first year in 2007 and is offering an Associates in Applied Science in Dental Hygiene.
